Marhsal Field :: essays research papers fc
Marshal Field The elder Marshall Field considered himself the ââ¬Å"Chief Apostle of the American Way,â⬠he epitomized the American Dream by becoming one of Americaââ¬â¢s first rags to riches stories in the industrial boom of both the pre-Antebellum and post-Antebellum periods. Marshall Field was born and raised as a humble farm boy and became perhaps the greatest businessman this country has ever had. Field learned his work ethic as a young boy by direct example of his father, who started working two hours before daybreak and stopped two hours after. As soon as Marshall could walk, he was working on the family farm. At the age of six, he enrolled in district school only during the winter months when farm work was scarce. He continued these lines of life until the age of fifteen, when the Field family was forced to stop working their farm due to a road closure. At this time it was decided that since Marshall was the youngest son and did not qualify for of the estate property, that he would have to go out and earn his own living. His father being friends with the local dry goods (general store) owner secured Marshall a clerking job in the dry goods store. Ironically, Marshall was fired from that same job after two weeks. When the father inquired what had happened the owner told him that your son has no future in the dry goods market and he should be kept at home on the farm where he belongs. Marshall Field then began working as a hired hand on his brotherââ¬â¢s farm. After two years of being his brotherââ¬â¢s servant, he moved to Pittsfield, Massachusetts with his other brother. His brother had secured Marshall a job at the Deacon-H.G. Davis dry goods store. There his first year salary was a measly $400. However, he was able to save two hundred of this by sleeping in the store. By the time of the 1857 panic, Marshall had modernized Deaconââ¬â¢s credit policies; subsequently Deacon was not monetarily damaged by the panic. By modernizing Deaconââ¬â¢s credit programs Field was able to insure the storeââ¬â¢s future by making credit harder to attain, by shortening the amount of time customers had to repay the store. Because of some unwise business dealings the storeââ¬â¢s owners had been involved in, the store was reorganized into Cooley, Farwell and Company. Marshall Field was then awarded a partnership for his part in saving the store from the Panic.

On the sidewalk bleeding Essay
Sixteen year old, Andy Anderson, was found dead 3:00 am in the morning by his girlfriend Laura. Andy Anderson a member of a gang that refer to themselves as the ROYALS recently got stabbed by another gang group the GUARDIANS. This incident took place in a dark alley right in front Alfredoââ¬â¢s, a local corner store. The police think that andy was stabbed around 11:30 p.m. and slowly bled to death. He was stabbed with a knife just below his rib cage. Due to some evidences weââ¬â¢ve gathered at the scene and witnesses we spoke to, we have some major leads on this crime scene. Our first witness was a 32 year old man, luke lucas, who was sorry that he was too drunk to realize that andy was dying. ââ¬Å" I only wish I would have been sober, I would of been able to help.â⬠He said during his interview. Our next witnesses were two teens, they saw Andy lying down ââ¬Å"on the sidewalk bleedingâ⬠and wanted to help â⬠¦ until they saw his bright purple ROYALS jacket. The two teens did not want to get mixed up in between these two gangs. We are still asking them further questions on this because we feel that weââ¬â¢re not getting the whole story. This devastating tragic event really shows the extreme dangers of gang violence. When the police saw Andyââ¬â¢s ROYALS jacket that he had taken off, they knew that this wasnââ¬â¢t just a random act of violence, and that this was a planned attack. What a price to pay for being in a teen death, what a tragedy. Police would like anyone with any kind of information with any kind of information to contact 69 division or to leave an anonymous tip for crime stoppers. Andyââ¬â¢s funeral will be held at Holy Redeemer Roma n Catholic Church in Ottawa Sunday afternoon. Donations are being accepted by the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa in the teenââ¬â¢s honour.

Musculinity and drinking
1.à Does the study meet the scientific requirements? It cannot be denied that scientific study has become of great importance to any profession.à Everyone is aware of the fact that knowledge is increased through study and that critique of that study can also provide a basis for improving the study practices.à This study, ââ¬Å"The Glass Phallus Pub (lic) Masculinity and Drinking in Rural New Zealand by Hugh Campbell meet the scientific requirements as it involved an intensive analysis of a particular site.2.à Is it a research study? Moreover, it is a scientific study utilizing the ethnographic fieldwork research methods.à Ethnographic research or fieldwork is considered an essential part of the training towards becoming a social scientist such that it is said to play a role in ââ¬Å"consciousness raisingâ⬠by extending oneââ¬â¢s view of the world and challenging oneââ¬â¢s assumptions about the nature of things (Robson, 1993).à Through ethnographic research the fieldworker gains an appreciation of the diversity and complexity of the human social condition and, at the same time, of the ultimate unity of human-kind.3.à Is it a quantitative study? No, it is not a quantitative study since it did not use any notation system. It must be noted that quantitative researchers assign numbers to observations and produce data by counting and measuring things.à Further, this study did not use any counting and measuring of things.4. Is it a qualitative study?Yes, this is a qualitative study since the researcher did not make counts or assign numbers to his observations. But rather, the researcher gain access into the ââ¬Å"life-worldâ⬠of his subjects and male groups; that is, to discover their motivations, their sources of meaning, their emotions and other subjective aspects of their lives because it is only in doing so that a researcher will be able to see, to describe, and to understand human behavior and social phenomena with greater d epth.à In addition, the researcher employed a qualitative research method which is participatory ethnographic fieldwork (p.262)5.à Is it clearly written?Yes, it is clearly written as the researcher used the first person and based on his experiences and analysis6.à Assess the title. The title is somewhat vague though as the author used a metaphor and one may not be totally familiar with ââ¬Å"The Glass Phallus.â⬠à So, one has to read the article thoroughly first before understanding the meaning behind the title.7.à Assess the authors` affiliations. Not much of the authors` affiliations were included in the study except that he has lived in the research area or community for five years as this is a participatory ethnographic fieldwork (p.262)8.à Assess the abstract. The abstract is clearly stated and includes the necessary things to include in an abstract such as the subjects and locale of the study, design of the study, the results, and the conclusion.9.à Asse ss the references. The references used were comprehensive and suited to the given study.10.à Is there a centrality of purpose between the introduction, method, and results?Yes, more or less thereââ¬â¢s a centrality of purpose between the introduction, method, and results. But lesser centrality between introduction and method as the introduction is more of a myth about the rural pub, a nostalgic fiction of yesteryears as described in the introduction.à The method and results has more centrality as the author was able to connect the method used which is ethnographic fieldwork to the results of the study which is more qualitative.à The results of the study presented are ethnographic data which are the product of systematic and sustained observation.11.à Critique the introduction according to:ââ¬â the literature reviewThe authorsââ¬â¢ review of literature was conducted and integrated in the discussion part of the article although previous studies were not referred t o by specific articles, the names of authors and publication years were given. Moreover, the literature reported supported the selected qualitative method used in the study.ââ¬â à à study purposeThis study, ââ¬Å"The Glass Phallus Pub (lic) Masculinity and Drinking in Rural New Zealandâ⬠by Hugh Campbell, examined the various ways in which pubs operate as a social site, where male power is constructed in rural communities.à Another is to examine the way in which symbolic notions of rurality are integral to the construction of gendered power in rural space.12.à Critiques the Method according toââ¬â the sample selectionThe sample of the study population was large (150-200) men who worked in farm service industries, were farm workers, owned or managed small farm service firms, or (a minority) were bachelor farmers.à Manual laborers on farms and in the farm service industries constituted the majority, but men from the agricultural petite bourgeoisie also were presented consistently. The participant sample selected basically on their performance known as the after-work drinking session.à The temporal parameters of after-work drinking strongly influenced which local men could join the pub (lic) performance of masculinity.à In addition to the fact that this study was the result of two periods of fieldwork within 5 years of ethnographic research, all the above mentioned criteria achieved the data saturation required.ââ¬â the study designA participatory ethnographic study using formal and informal interviews was conducted to frame the design of the study (p.262). The method used was appropriate for this study as it sought to examine the various ways in which pubs operate as a social site, where male power is constructed in rural communities.à Also to examine the way in which symbolic notions of rurality are integral to the construction of gendered power in rural space. In addition, the qualitative interviews were undertaken to und erstand the experiences and all that they entail.ââ¬â data collection proceduresData collection procedure used which was formal and informal interviews and were consistent with the purpose of the study since the study was a qualitative.à Moreover, 200 hours of participatory ethnographic fieldwork (in the pubs), made an even greater abundance of informal discussion and dialogue with members of the community.ââ¬â researcherââ¬â¢s roleThe researcherââ¬â¢s role is to conduct interviews (formal or informal) using the participatory ethnographic fieldwork.ââ¬â the issue of timeThis study was done for approximately 5 years of living in the community. The researcher has done interviews and discussions not just in the pubs but also in various locales such as sports clubs, churches, and voluntary organizations, and in the subjects` workplace.ââ¬â materials/instruments usedThe strategies and tools involved in data collection includes ethnographic audiotaped interviews w hich includes open-ended, broad ââ¬Å"grand tourâ⬠questions followed by more focused and in-depth discussions; participant observations were conducted in a variety of places; photography was extensive.13.à Critique the Results according toââ¬â findingsAnalysis from data obtained revealed two major characteristics of pub drinking performance, which are the conversational cockfighting and the disciplines of drinking. These two combine to ensure that a particular version of masculinity, here called pub(lic) masculinity reproduce itself.à A further finding is that masculinity in this kind of performative situation develops a degree of invisibility.ââ¬â tables, graphs or chartsNo tables, graphs, or charts were included in the study.ââ¬â statistical data and tests usedNo statistical data or tests were used as this is a qualitative study. So no sample data were given.à Only some conversation or descriptive data were presented.-discussionThe discussion of the res ult was done comprehensively and thus thoroughly-limitationsThe researcher realized the difficulties of analyzing an invisible masculinity and argues that rendering masculinity is an important task for any sociological analysis of both public leisure sites in rural society.-implicationsââ¬â The significant implication of this study is that rural sociologists must move quickly beyond viewing rural pub as just another aspect of the rural idyll but it is more of the operation of gendered power in rural communities, and as a site where rural masculinities are enacted and defended.ReferenceRobson, C. How to Make a Smoke Bomb Fountain Firework
How to Make a Smoke Bomb Fountain Firework Kick the traditional smoke bomb recipe up a notch to make a firework fountain that shoots purple flames with lots of smoke. This is a fun and easy homemade firework project. Plus, its economical. You can get a long-lasting display for quite a lot less money than it would cost to purchase a fountain firework. Smoke Bomb Fountain Materials SugarPotassium nitrate (sold as saltpeter or stump remover)Toilet paper tubeAluminum foil Construct the Smoke Bomb Fountain This is the traditional homemade smoke bomb, except instead of making small cookie-sized smoke bombs, you pour the smoke bomb mixture into a toilet paper tube. You wrap the outside of the tube with foil so that the smoke and fire will escape out the top of the tube. Finally, you take the fountain outside and light the edge of the toilet paper tube. Wrap the bottom and sides of an empty toilet paper tube with aluminum foil. The purpose of the foil is to direct the fountain upward. In a skillet, mix together 1/2 cup of sugar with 1/2 cup of potassium nitrate.Stir the mixture over medium heat.Continue cooking the smoke bomb fountain mixture until it is brown and well-mixed.Remove the mixture from heat and pour or spoon it into the foil-wrapped tube. Allow the tube to cool so you can handle it.Take the fountain firework outdoors and place it on a fire-safe surface, away from trees or buildings.Light the toilet paper tube on fire with a long-handled lighter or match. Move away from the fountain. After the firework is done, douse the area with water to make sure the fire is out. Kindred in 3rd Person essays
Kindred in 3rd Person essays In the novel Kindred by Octavia Butler we see the first hand events of an African American woman from California in the 1970s travel to the antebellum south in the 19th century. This novel then can be called a slave narrative witch is a first hand account of a slaves life. These are done in a first person perspective for the reason that it is the slave who is merely telling their life. Yet what would happen to the power, which is put in this novel if the perspective was change from the one who experienced the events to someone who saw the events unfold? To change from the first person to the third person. This could only have one of two out come one would be that it would only make the novel better by allowing the reader to see all that the author wants them to see the other is that it could make the novel worse by confusing the reader. Both of these outcomes could occur and yet it would also seam that niter could happen and that it would not change the effectiveness of the novel to show the authors point. Yet what is the authors point? It is simple to see that the author is trying to show that people can do things that today are considered morally wrong and evil and yet these people fell that they are doing noting wrong. This is easily show with the first person perspective of Dana by her encounter with her ancestors of Tom and Rufus Weylin. She is treated badly like a slave and yet both of theses men find that they are still good men even though they do what they do to their slaves. This is a third person perspective for Dana witnessed all of the things that were done to these slaves and yet it was also a first person perspective for it was Dana who saw these events and it is her memory. Dana herself also has to endure the horrors of slavery in the time that she spends in the antebellum south. Yet what if all of this was to be in the third person it would have a much different affect on the reader ...

Procedures or Methods - Essay Example All in all, eating disorders are a serious problem facing many high school students, and they need to be mitigated. This paper will outline the research methods that can be used to carry out research causes of eating disorders for high school students, and how these disorders can be mitigated. The research design of this topic included four approaches. They were: which questions to study, which information is applicable, what data to gather, and how to evaluate the findings. The best research plan depends on the research question plus the orientation of the researchers (Discovery Education, 2009). Every design, however, has its negative and positive sides. In this particular study, the researcher can first identify the questions that need to be answered through research. The next step would entail finding out which information is applicable and useful. The research can then discern the data to gather, after which he or she can come up with ways of evaluating the validity of the findings. Studentsââ¬â¢ chances for developing bulimia or anorexia were assessed through the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26). This test was developed by Garner and colleagues in 1982 (Hodges, 2009). The test is a 26-item questionnaire split into three subscales, dieting, oral control, as well as bulimia, which is commonly used to monitor peoples eating behaviors and attitudes that are associated with nutrition disorders. Higher scores reveal more disordered behaviors and attitudes than lower scores. Scores of 15 to 26 show a medium level of threat for developing a nutrition disorder. Scores of 27 and beyond, on the other hand, signify a high level of risk for developing a nutrition disorder. The Eating Attitudes Test-26 has been authorized in various age groups and cultures, and would therefore be the best research instrument in finding out the causes of eating disorders and how they can be mitigated (Hodges, 2009).
